CNN —Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has welcomed British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe’s investment into the club, saying that the new co-owner can restore the European powerhouse to its glory years. Yorke concedes, however, that for the time being the Red Devils will not be able to compete for the English Premier League title. Yorke would go on to win a further two Premier Leagues with the Red Devils before leaving the club in the summer of 2002. “We really should be in the [Premier League] top four relatively comfortably, and it hasn’t been that easy a ride for us. “I think Alan Shearer is still the current [record] holder in the Premier League and was a real goal machine.

CNN —Manchester City sealed the Premier League title on Saturday, as Arsenal’s shock 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest ended any lingering mathematical probability of the north London team usurping Pep Guardiola’s side in the title race. It is a result that has appeared increasingly inevitable for weeks as City’s run of 23 unbeaten games coincided with and influenced Arsenal’s slow capitulation from its perch at the top of the table, which it had occupied for much of the season. Despite still holding an eight-point cushion just last month, Arsenal’s hopes of a first title since the 2003/04 season have been steadily extinguished following a run of three improbable draws and a 4-1 drubbing at Manchester City in April, compounded by a 3-0 defeat to Brighton last week and now this loss at Nottingham, a team fighting for its very survival in the Premier League. And so the idea of City winning the Premier League, its fifth title in six years, has had time to percolate and establish itself, almost normalizing an achievement so monumental it is matched by just one other team in the league’s entire history – Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United between 1995/96 and 2000/01. CNN —Manchester United’s owners announced their intention on Tuesday to explore the sale of the iconic club, saying a “process to explore strategic alternatives” had begun. Those alternatives could include the total sale of the club by the Glazer family, who took control of Manchester United in 2005. “As part of this process, the Board will consider all strategic alternatives, including new investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions involving the Company,” said a United statement. “We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the Club today and in the future. According to Forbes, Manchester United is the third most valuable football club in the world at $4.6 billion – behind only Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
